Father of Anne Tucker / Isle of Wight
"Two-Bottle Tucker" Painting - 35 Great Hill Road
Robert Tucker, father of Anne Tucker, lived on the south coast of the Isle of Wight in the early 19th century. Few details of his life have been passed down through the ages, but he has long been known as “Two Bottle Tucker”. Since he was known to have been the owner of the still-functioning “Tipsy Mouse Pub” in Chale, it’s surmised he partook in the consumption of two bottles of wine (probably fine Burgundy) every day. Two Bottle Tucker is important since his daughter, Anne Tucker, married William Hearn Jacob (1797-1871) of Chale Abbey, where they raised thirteen children. One son, Leonard Jacob (1826 – 1906) came to America in 1844 where he lived in New York City with his aunt Henrietta Tucker Arnold (1804-1874). After a successful career with the retailer Arnold & Constable, plus real estate investments in New York and Texas, Leonard became the namesake of the Leonard Jacob Corporation established in 1924.
The Brand
W + L
The " W+L " was the official brand used for branding cattle on the Santa Marta ranch. The "W" stands for 'William', the "L" for 'Leonard', two of Leonard Jacob's children who went to south Texas in the late 19th century to ride the ranch and drive cattle.
